How to Wear a Bharatanatyam Costume – A Complete Step-by-Step Guide

Bharatanatyam costume set with pant, blouse, pallu, centre fan and seat belt - Shiva Sai Collections

Wearing a Bharatanatyam costume correctly is just as important as the dance itself. A well-draped costume enhances your stage presence, allows free movement, and reflects the grace of this classical art form. Here is a complete guide to help dancers, students, and parents get it right every time.

What You Will Need

  • Bharatanatyam costume set (pant, blouse, pallu, centre long fan, seat belt and small round fan (optional))
  • Safety pins (at least 5 to 7)
  • Dance belt or waist string

Step 1 – Wear the Blouse

Start with the blouse (half blouse or full blouse depending on your costume). Ensure it fits snugly and allows full arm movement for mudras.

Step 2 – Drape the Pallu

Bring the pallu over the left shoulder and pin it neatly. Ensure it does not slip during performance.

Step 3 – Wear the Pant

Wear the pant like a pyjama pant around your waist and tie the knot using strings. Also ensure the blouse (if it is a full blouse) and pallu are tucked into the pant.

Step 4 – Attach the Centre Long Fan

Attach the centre long fan to the pant using the velcro or hook provided and tie it around the waist using the nada provided. They should fan out beautifully when you sit in Araimandi (half-sit position).

Step 5 – Drape the Seat Belt

Bring the seat belt around your waist from back to front and hook it with the provided hooks.

Step 6 – Drape the Small Round Fan

Drape the small round fan around your waist from front to back and tie using the strings provided. Sometimes this will be an optional step depending on the costume.

Step 7 – Final Check

  • Sit in Araimandi and check that the fans open fully
  • Raise both arms — ensure the blouse doesn’t ride up

Tips for a Stage-Ready Look

  • Use strong safety pins, not small ones
  • Iron the costume before wearing
  • Wear the costume 30 minutes before performance to adjust
